This morning I went to the grocery store by myself and I went when I was hungry. You know what that means if you have ever gone to the grocery on an empty stomach. My willpower was high as I consulted my list. I got only the things listed until I got to the front of the store and there were bins of candy that had different flavors that I had never tried before. So, I decided my family and I would do a chocolate taste test. I figured they wouldn't complain. I picked up five different candy bars: Milky Way Fudge, Snickers Maple Almond, Snickers Creamy Peanut Butter, Three Musketeers Birthday Cake, and Hershey Waffle Strawberry Layer Crunch.
After lunch the four of us gathered around our card table. This table is in the middle of the room at the moment for a variety of reasons. We have played cards, set up a printer, my son filmed his latest fishing video, and now we have had a taste test. Maybe it will get put away this week.
I unwrapped each bar, split them, we each smelled the chocolate, and then tasted. We each then gave a thumbs up or thumbs down with our comments.
First up was 3 Musketeers Birthday Cake. The inside is white with sprinkles on the package. The sprinkles are not nearly as noticeable once you open up the bar. At first I thought there was a bit of an angel food taste. It still had the same texture as a regular 3 Musketeers bar so the flavor was the difference. It was fine but I would never choose this over a regular 3 Musketeers. My hubs liked this one. Both kids gave it a thumbs down.
Next up was Milky Way Fudge. The inside is dense and smelled like brownies. The only one of us that liked this was my daughter. The smell appealed to her and she said she would eat it again. The rest of us kind of went "meh". Three thumbs down, one thumb up.
The next stop on our candy tasting was Snickers Maple Almond. When we opened the package my daughter said "Ooh this smells like Cracker Barrel!" The maple was prevalent. The almonds were pretty fine along the bottom of the candy. This was a plus in my book as I am not a fan of nuts in chocolate. This was a surprising win and got four thumbs up! I liked the way this was packaged as. It was split into 4 small pieces so if you had this for yourself you could spread out the treat throughout the day. I only ate half of my piece (at first) because it was really sweet.
We decided to split up the 2 snickers with the Hershey's Waffle Strawberry Layer Crunch. When we opened this one we all smelled the strawberry right away. If you have ever had the strawberry wafer cookies, this candy bar smelled like those. The strawberry was really strong but we all really liked it. This was packaged in 4 pieces like the Snickers so it made it easy to distribute and gave us all a reasonable sized piece. My hubs said he thought this would be really good as a garnish on top of ice cream. 4 thumbs up!
Our last treat to try was Snickers Creamy Peanut Butter. I love peanut butter and I love caramel so I figured this one would be a win for me. The smell was of freshly ground peanuts just like it says on the package. The surprising this about this was was the layer of caramel was on the bottom with a really thick layer of peanut butter. It was creamier than a Reese's but didn't taste like Reese's. 2 thumbs up, 2 thumbs down.
Overall our favorites were Maple Almond Snickers and Hershey's Strawberry. But, I am guessing none of us would turn up our noses if any of the above were offered. Now, don't go to the store on an empty stomach or you will have to do a taste test too.
