Cheeseburger Cake

Last year my mom got me a subscription to Food Network Magazine. It has been a fun mag to have in the house. This month one of the main recipes was a Cheeseburger cake. Munchkin saw it and had to have it for her birthday. Now, I have to admit I have become a bit of a snob when it comes to using box mixes and the recipe called for 2. Instead of following the recipe (which can be found here)

I made 2 round chocolate cakes from my Hershey cookbook and this strawberry cake. Munchkin requested the top be strawberry and the meat patty and bottom bun be chocolate. The most time consuming part of this cake was the baking of the cakes.
My friend Angela came over and rolled out the fondant for the cheese. The one other change I made was that I got green apple licorice for the lettuce leaves. It was flat rectangles so it alleviated the need for rolling.

When I got to the point where I was actually decorating the cake it was starting to get kind of late. Ang and I needed to go because we were headed out the door to play bunco. I whipped up some cream cheese frosting and some chocolate frosting. I dipped the beaters in the chocolate and then back into the cream cheese and added some yellow and red food coloring to get the bun color.

Doesn't the cheese look fantastic! This was Angela's first time working with it and she did a fabulous job!!
Looking at the photos I know I could have done a bit better on the decorating. However, once the frosting was made it took about 15 minutes to get everything together. I was slapping things together so I could get out the door. My sweet husband even ran back in the house to grab a different shirt for me to wear. As I got in the car I looked down and realized I had frosting and powdered sugar all over me.
The inside is not terribly realistic but that is ok. The birthday girl loved it and that was what was important.
One little detail...If the top bun wasn't pink it would be more obvious. You might notice in the first photo the cookie cutter in the middle of the batter. The whole point of that was that when we cut into the cake you would be able to see the burger was medium well. :) One of my hubbys brilliant ideas. Loved that idea!! :)
The meat patty was left bigger than the bottom bun on purpose as we all like big burgers!

This was a fun cake to put together and I am looking forward to the next one! :)

Squinkies

Have you seen these little squinkies? They are pretty cute but man they are hard to find. Here are 3 of the 4 that came in Little Man's set because #4 was probably under the couch. At least they don't make me want to scream obscenities when I step on them.

Happy Birthday Munchkin!

Wow!!! My sweet baby girl you are 9! Where on earth has the time gone? I remember grandma saying "Where did my 6 pound 2 oz baby go" and I would kind of roll my eyes. But now I get it! The time is flying. It was only yesterday you were a tiny baby.
You, my sweet girl, are passionate! You are very vocal in things you find offensive (like smoking in non smoking areas). You are constantly on the move...unless you are reading a book and then we can't get your nose out of it. You love to help out in the kitchen and even have come up with your own secret ingredient white sauce for spaghetti. We made that today for your party and all the kids that ate it loved it!

I am so proud of how well you did in school this year, straight A's all year! You excel at anything you try at and I hope that you will continue trying hard at all you do. You are so creative! You come up with all kinds of ideas for you and Little Man to do. The two of you play a game called J&K where you make up songs and put on plays. You are also in a band together in which you sing and Little Man plays guitar or drums.

For the most part you are so very sweet but you have your moments of crazy as well. Mostly when things do not go your way.
I love that when you see something you go for it. Right now you are saving money for a DS. You are so close and your attitude about helping out around the house to raise extra money has been amazing.

I am so proud of your decision to get baptized last month. It shows you are growing in the knowledge of Christ.
This years cake you chose after seeing it in Food Network Magazine. Only, you requested strawberry cake for part of it. You were pretty excited that you got to eat the extra licorice. :)
I love seeing you change and grow each and every year. You are so independent but still love for me to come to school for lunches. I will do that as long as you want me too.
My prayer for you over this next year is that you will continue to seek God, that you will be kind to your brother and try in any situation you are faced with. Daddy, Little Man and I love you so much and I am so blessed to be your mom! I love you Munchkin! Happy birthday!
